After a lot of work by students and teachers, our whole 7th and 8th grade have been regrouped into rooms based on the topic they developed. So how does a teacher guide their students without delivering a typical lesson? We need to give students a lot of time and independence on their projects, but we know that they will need help. But how do you provide consistent help when the range of topics is so vast?
We designed a “generic lesson routine” for mentor teachers to use as a model, adjusting as they see fit.
- Quick check-in with all students (Have you done any work since last time?)
- Short 10 minute strategy session
- Main chunk of the time to work independently while the mentor teacher follows up with individuals.

Note-taking and recording progress
The format students use for note-taking is totally up to them. The only requirement we have is the “Exit Ticket” spreadsheet is kept up to date each lesson. Below is an example from a previous year. Each lesson students answer three questions:
- What did you accomplish today?
- What’s your goal for next lesson?
- At this point, what do you think your final product will look like?
